Marstrand is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historical province of Bohuslän. It is located about 30 km northwest of Gothenburg on the islands of Marstrandsö and Koö in the Skagerrak. Marstrandsö is a car-free island and can only be reached by ferry from the island of Koö. Koö is located 100-150 m east of Marstrand and the ferry crossing takes only a few minutes. On Marstrandsö is the older part of Marstrand, which still has a medieval layout. The houses are mainly built of wood. Interesting buildings are Marstrands Kyrka from the 14th century, the societal house from 1886, the Warmbad from 1858 and the Grand Hotel. The townscape is dominated by the Carlsten Fortress towering over the town, as well as the hotels and villas of the 19th century bathers. Every year at the beginning of July, Marstrand hosts the Match Cup Sweden sailing regatta. In June 2009 Marstrand was the destination of the 8th leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.
