The IJsselmeer is a district on the North Sea, where even less experienced sailors and family vacations can make their trips near the North Sea. Due to the diking of the former Zuiderzee, the area has developed into an inland lake, from which there are also many accesses to the canals and lakes inland in the Netherlands. The area is popular with water sports enthusiasts and there is a wide range of activities on offer. Starting ports directly on the IJsselmeer are Lemmer, Hindeloopen, Stavoren and Lelystad.

Climate: temperate with temperatures between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius

Yacht charter IJsselmeer

The IJsselmeer is an inland lake in the west of the Netherlands and merges into the Markermeer, on whose coast the capital Amsterdam is located. Unlike the North Sea, there are no tides here. Once the Zuiderzee was part of the Waddenzee and the North Sea, through diking it developed into an inland lake. However, access to the sea is possible through locks. Today, the IJsselmeer is a popular sailing and water sports area, where even less experienced sailors can find suitable conditions. Moreover, the distances between the harbors are short. However, weather changes, shallow water depth as well as fog are the challenges in this area.

On a yacht charter IJsselmeer to the Frisian Islands, the Frisian Lake District and the Frisian Eleven

Our base Lemmer is located in the northern IJsselmeer in the province of Friesland. Here you can arrange your vacation for example to an Elf city cruise. The Frisian Elf are the places, which already in the Middle Ages got city rights and in which the trade flourished at that time. Some of them are located on the IJsselmeer, others are located in the Frisian inland, which is a water-rich area, with several lakes connected by canals, and is called the Frisian Lake District . Stations can be, for example, Stavoren and Hindeloopen on the IJsselmeer, IJlst, Leeuwarden, Dokkum and Franeker inland, and Harlingen on the North Sea. They are towns of quite different sizes from under 1000 to over 90 000 inhabitants. Old houses and facades of the cities remind of the golden trading times in the Middle Ages and 17th century. The canals also pass through natural areas. A tour through Friesland that decelerates.

Young Lelystadt is located at the junction of the IJsselmeer and Markermeer in the province of Flevoland. The region has its chequered history with the element of water: stretches of land that became islands due to storms, silting that ended the golden age of trade, and islands that became polder landscapes due to diking, such as Urk and Schokland. The villages and towns along the former Zuiderzee have preserved their traditions, both on the islands that were separated for centuries and those on the mainland. Their old colorful wooden houses and facades are now listed, and each town maintains its tradition, whether it is cheese making in Edam or pottery in Workum. Other attractions include the fortified town of Naarden and Muider Castle, and the Oostervaardersplassen nature reserve. Southwest of the Markermeer lies the capital Amsterdam, which you can include in your cruise.

If you have North Sea experience you can also include the Waddenzee and the Frisian Islands in your cruise, like Texel, Vlieland or Terschelling.
