On a yacht charter Lemmer through the IJsselmeer, to the Frisian Elf and the Frisian Lakes

From Lemmer, it's worth taking a cruise to the towns of the Frisian Elf, the places in Friesland that were granted city rights in the Middle Ages. Once flourishing trading towns and members of the Hanseatic League, these coastal towns experienced their first decline after the fall of the Hanseatic League and in the 18th century due to silting. Today, many of their old houses and facades still stand and are listed as historic monuments.
Just a little north of Lemmer lies Stavoren, the oldest town of the Elf. Stavoren has been a city of trade and seafarers for over 1000 years, as well as the seat of the Frisian kings. However, at the end of the Middle Ages, the town experienced its decline. The loss is still symbolically represented by the statue with the well-known legend of the "Vrouwtje van Stavoren" in the harbor. Today Stavoren is popular with water sports enthusiasts. However, the character of the former Hanseatic city can still be discovered everywhere during a walk through the city. A little north of Stavoren lies a small idyllic member of the Frisian Elf, Hindeloopen. This also former Hanseatic town is now a listed building with its old houses. The captain's houses are also a special feature.
Workum has kept its importance after the decline of the Hanseatic League through shipbuilding and its characteristic pottery. The potteries can also be visited.
Like its southern neighbors, Makkum once prospered through trade, but was also a victim of the silting of the Zuiderzee. The town lies very close to the Waddenzee and from here experienced North Sea sailors can start their trip to the Frisian islands. In Makkum, besides fishing and water sports, the production of ceramics and tiles is the typical trade of the place. The even royal ceramic factories can also be visited.
Via the Frisian Lake District you can reach other inland cities of the Elf. In Stavoren, for example, you can cross the canals towards Sloten, IJlst, Sneek, Leeuwarden, Dokkum and Franeker. From the latter, Harlingen on the North Sea is not far, and south of it are again Makkum, Workum and Stavoren.

Alternatively, you can also start from Lelystadt on the border between the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer. Also the destinations which are described there can be reached from Lemmer.
