With a coastline of nearly 7500 kilometers Brazil offers a lot of opportunities for a cruise. Especially in the south of the fifth largest country in the world ideal conditions are found for a yacht charter cruise. The area between the two cities São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is easily accessible due to the two large cities. Due to the tropical to subtropical weather conditions sailing is possible all year round. You have to expect rainfalls again and again, they are often heavy but short.

In the big bay of Ilha Grande the Atlantic shows a moderate side, because the swell is shielded here by the "big island" and its smaller neighbors, so that the area is also well suited for sailing beginners and families. From Angra dos Reis you can reach the dream beaches of the region and make excursions into the species-rich rainforest. On the other side of the bay is Paraty, a city that takes you into the colonial past of the area. If you feel like blue water sailing or want to sail along the Atlantic coast, you can start directly from Ubatuba or make a side trip here. From all three bases the popular island Ilha Grande is not far away.

Climate:Tropical to subtropical with temperatures between 23 and 30 degrees.
Winds: Southeast trade wind
Sailing season: all year round, best April/May and September/November

São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, these two names come to mind when thinking of Brazil. Of course also the famous carnival. Sailing is not yet directly associated with the most populous country in South America. Wrongly, Brazil with its tropical to subtropical weather and the reliable southeast trade winds on the Atlantic coast offers a fantastic sailing area all year round and for sailors of all experience levels. Especially the coastline between the two metropolises Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the so called Costa Verde of Brazil, is a worthwhile destination for sailors of all kinds and a trip here can also be combined with a city trip to the two big cities of the country.
The region around Angra dos Reis and the bay of Ilha Grande offers everything for a sailing vacation. Situated only 70 nautical miles east of Rio de Janeiro, this is virtually the home sailing area for yachties from the metropolis of 11 million. Only the supply with cash can be a little problematic, because only in Angra dos Reis ATMs are available. Also credit cards are not accepted everywhere. On the other hand, you will find a sailing area with countless anchorages in beautiful bays on more than 350 islands. The wind conditions are constant but not too demanding. Sailing around the islands requires some attention due to shoals and rocks in the water.

Flights to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo from Germany take about 16 hours with usually one stopover. To enter the country, German citizens need a passport that should be valid for at least 6 months. Current and further information can be found on the website of the German Foreign Office.

Ilha Grande - a dream island with an eventful history

The most famous and largest island of the region is Ilha Grande. With its countless bays and beaches it is a popular tourist destination. The island is a nature reserve and cars are prohibited here. There are hardly any paved roads, life takes place mainly on the beach or on the many hiking trails across the rainforest. Lopes Mendes beach is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Brazil: almost 3 kilometers of the finest white sand merge into blue, clear water against the bright green backdrop of the Atlantic rainforest. The beach is located on the south side of the island and therefore faces the open Atlantic Ocean. The waves are stronger here than on the north side of the island, which is why it is a popular destination for surfers. Divers will find some shipwrecks around the island, which are accessible. At the time of the gold rush, the island provided shelter for pirates who intercepted merchant ships bound for Portugal from here. One of the most famous is the wreck of the Pinguino, which sank in 1966, off the bay of Sitio Forte. Another diving spot is located in front of the bay of Bananal, here at a depth of 7 meters lies the wreck of a helicopter. In general, the dive spots around Ilha Grande are considered the most beautiful in Brazil. The biodiversity under water is enormous. Maybe you will meet one of the different species of sea turtles in Lagoa Verde or Lagoa Azul, whose population has recovered due to special protection.
On the beach of Dois Rios you can visit the ruins of a prison, which was established on the island from 1903 to 1994 and is considered the toughest of Brazil. Large parts of the prison have been demolished, but here a small part of the island's dark history can be experienced at the Museu do Cárcere. From here, a hiking trail also leads past mangrove swamps and salt and freshwater lagoons into the rainforest. The entire island is well connected by hiking trails. These trails, some still trodden by the original inhabitants, the Tupinambá Indians, lead past waterfalls, the impenetrable thicket of the rainforest and a fauna rich in species. Howler monkeys flit through the foliage, butterflies flutter in the occasional rays of sunlight that fall through the canopy of trees, and parrots call to each other among the trees.

A journey into the past, cachaça and the Atlantic rainforest

To the west of the bay lies the city of Paraty. In 1966, the old town was declared a historical monument. The architecture from the colonial period, primarily from the 17th century, is still exceptionally well preserved here. The old town is closed to motorized traffic and now and then a donkey cart rumbles over the cobblestones. Here you will find small restaurants serving traditional dishes. In the numerous souvenir stores along the small alleys you might find one or the other little thing for the ones at home and in the evening you stop in one of the small bars and enjoy a caipirinha with the cachaça distilled here. The heyday of the cachaça distilleries was the 1950s, but even today you can still visit a cachaça distillery not far from town on the Fazenda Murycana. Directly behind the city begins the Mata Atlântica, the Atlantic rainforest. Numerous orchid-lined streams run through the dense vegetation, waterfalls are frequently encountered (e.g. Cachoeira do Tobogã not far from Paraty), and sloths hanging in the trees remind us to take life a little easier.

Surfing hotspots and the "beautiful island

Are you looking for a bit more sailing challenge on your yacht charter Brazil, but don't want to miss out on the dream beaches, the beauty of the Atlantic rainforest and fantastic diving spots? Set sail in the direction of Ubatuba. The coast and beaches around the city are popular with surfers for their waves. Its reputation as the surfing capital of Brazil's Atlantic coast is due in part to the fact that several of the annual surfing competitions are held here in the area, such as on Itamambuca Beach. Surfers of all levels can find the right wave here.

In front of Ubatuba there are several islands in the sea, which guarantee a relaxing stop and swimming pleasure. Especially Ilhabela, not only a "beautiful island" according to its name, is also located not far from Ubatuba. The fourth largest Atlantic island of the country is the vacation paradise for people from São Paulo, especially on weekends or during the vacation season the island is a popular destination for Paulistas. The beaches on the east coast are mostly accessible only from the water, which is why they are very popular with sailors looking for some seclusion in a bathing paradise. Divers and water sports enthusiasts will find ideal conditions for diving or water skiing at Praia da Fome and Praia do Poço.
