Brazil as a sailing destination? Not yet in everybody's mouth, but therefore not less impressive and pleasant to sail as for example the Caribbean. The sailing area is good to sail all year round, especially in spring and autumn. With temperatures averaging 25 °C paired with a water temperature of 18 to 26 °C, sailing is relaxed. Wind conditions are moderate, the southeast trade wind brings rain from time to time, mostly in strong but short showers, and shoals or reefs are well marked when present. Also families and sailing beginners will find here conditions under which a trip can be relaxed.
Ubatuba - Blue water sailing on Brazil's Atlantic coast
Ubatuba itself is a small town on Brazil's southeast coast and belongs to the state of São Paulo. The border with the state of Rio de Janeiro is not far. In the city you can find many small restaurants, for example on the beach promenade. Enjoy a typical churrasco misto - meat grilled over an open fire - with a caipirinha and a view of the sea. In the hinterland, the rainforest with its wealth of species invites you to go hiking. Several waterfalls offer a beautiful nature experience and swimming opportunities. Ubatuba is also home to one of the visitor centers of Tamar, an organization that works to protect sea turtles. Thanks to their work, five of the formerly endangered species are once again living off the Brazilian Atlantic coast. At the visitor center, you can learn more about the threat to these species, which are among the longest-lived on earth, and get up close and personal with some of the reptiles that were later reintroduced to the wild in various tanks.
Around the city there are many beaches, which are very popular with surfers due to their location on the Atlantic coast, such as Praia Vermelha Do Norte or Praia Itamambuca. Because of the abundance of good surf spots, Ubatuba is also considered the capital of Brazilian surfing, and it is not for nothing that some annual competitions in this sport are held here.
If you want to get involved in Brazil's eventful history, visit Ilha Anchieta not far from the city off the coast. Today a nature reserve, the island was the retreat of the Tupinambá, the indigenous population of this coastal strip, after the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, a prison was built on the island, which was used until 1957. The ruins of this prison now house a small museum.
Lonely beaches along the "beautiful island
Along the Atlantic coast towards the south, passing lonely sandy beaches, lies Ilhabela. Not only by name one of the most beautiful islands in Brazil. The island is a popular vacation destination, especially for Brazilians, so it can get crowded during the vacation season. However, many of the beaches on the east and west coast can only be reached from the sea, which gives you an advantage on a yacht charter Ubatuba. For example the beach Bonete, where a small fishing village has been preserved. For a trip into the underwater world with snorkel or diving equipment the beaches in the west and south of the island are particularly worthwhile. Here are a total of almost 50 wrecks, 19 of which are diveable. In the tropical rainforest you can still find lush nature and many waterfalls with natural pools for swimming in fresh water. Numerous hiking trails lead from the beaches into the thicket and invite to smaller or even larger hikes.
Peace and solitude or the hustle and bustle of Rio, a metropolis of millions
About 100 nautical miles to the northeast lies Rio de Janeiro, the coastal metropolis known for its Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. If, in addition to the tranquility and seclusion of Brazil's green coast, you are in the mood for Rio's concentrated energy, you will dare to take a trip to the city of 13 million people. The centrally located Marina Gloria offers a berth in the middle of the hustle and bustle, where it might be harder to find some peace in the evening, especially if you have previously experienced the contemplative solitude of the Costa Verde. The Clube Naval Charitas is a bit more tranquil. The city itself quickly casts its spell. And the list of things to do is endless.
On the way between Ubatuba and Rio is the bay around Ilha Grande. Between the bases of Paraty, a city still preserved from colonial times, and Angra dos Reis lie many small islands with countless beaches, one more beautiful than the other. They all have in common the white to golden sand and the lush rainforest in the background. The underwater world is rich in species and attracts divers of all levels of experience and already snorkeling even the little ones can discover a lot. Maybe even one of the sea turtles, which have become more numerous again here due to conservation projects and about which you can get information in the visitor center of Ubatuba.
