Yacht charter Angra dos Reis

A yacht charter Angra dos Reis takes you to the largest city of the Costa Verde in Brazil. Situated only 150 kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro and belonging to the state of the same name, you will be greeted by a lively, colorful port city, characterized by long sandy beaches and buildings from the colonial era. Easily accessible via the airport in Rio de Janeiro, the location in Angra dos Reis offers a nice starting point for a voyage of discovery in the Baia Ilha Grande.
In the city, the colonial-era architecture is still well preserved. Stroll through the old town to the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Modest on the outside, the church, which was completed in 1750 after 125 years of construction, charms with a richly decorated interior and a magnificent altar. The Igreja de Santa Luzia was the first church in the village and is located in the historic center of town. Restaurants and bars provide for a relaxed evening, why not try one of the local dishes with freshly caught fish or one of the traditional stews, such as cozido or feijoada, or drink a caipirinha in comfort, after all you are here in the region of origin of cachaça. A downer of the city is the only nuclear power plant in Brazil, only 10 kilometers away. But the archipelago around the Ilha Grande with its more than 300 islands, which lies directly in front of the door, is worth it. Once you arrive in Angra, you won't stay long in the city anyway. Set sail for beautiful islands and endless bays.

The best time to travel is between April and December, when the temperatures are pleasant. The trip does not fall into the rainy season in December and January.

The highlight of the islands around Angra dos Reis

The most famous and most visited island on your yacht charter Angra dos Reis is the largest island of the archipelago, therefore also called Ilha Grande. With an area of almost 200 km² and more than 100 beaches, Angra dos Reis offers enough space for a quiet vacation to all those who visit the popular island. A large part of the island is national park and covered with dense Atlantic rainforest. Howler monkeys and parrots find a protected habitat here and can be observed in their natural habitat. The island is overlooked by Pico do Papagaio, the second highest peak on the island at 982 meters. From the main town of the island, Vila do Abraão, it is a three-hour hike to enjoy the view of the island, the sea and, in good weather, the mainland.

On the island, nature is still pristine, despite tourists, there are no large developments and no cars drive on the island to this day. At the beach of Dois Rios, two rivers flow into the sea and offer freshwater bathing in addition to the pleasures of bathing in the salty wet. The neighboring beach to the east, Lopes Mendes, is the most famous beach on the island. Facing south, it is exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean, which makes it especially popular with surfers. Praia Preta, with its partly black sand, is an eye-catcher. Praia San Agostino, on the other hand, is a smaller rock-lined beach that is not as crowded as Lopes Mendes, but at least as beautiful. For diving, the natural basin of Lagoa Azul, the blue lagoon, is particularly suitable. The list could be continued endlessly, each beach more beautiful than the other and each with its own peculiarity. The beaches on the south coast have more waves, while the beaches on the west, north and east are calmer, as they do not face the open sea.
In the midst of this paradisiacal setting, one also encounters the tragic chapters of the South American country's history. Originally, the island belonged to the settlement area of the Tupinambá Indians, before they were driven out more and more by the Portuguese colonial rulers from the 16th century on. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Brazil was the largest slave market in the world. Over 1 million Africans were shipped by sea to Brazil to work on the plantations here. Ilha Grande was one of the largest slave transshipment points in Brazil during this time. After this dark chapter of Brazilian history came to an end, a cholera quarantine station for immigrants was built on the island, and later a closed institution for lepers. In 1964, it became a prison island and housed the country's most serious criminals until 1994. On the beach of Dois Rios, for example, the remains of the former prison can be visited.

A trip to the colonial past

Even if you sail to the western end of the bay of Ilha Grande, you will come across remnants of the colonial era, this time it is the colorful backdrop of the city of Paraty, whose old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Here, very well preserved colonial-era buildings line up. The houses are designed with colorful door and window frames, and cars are prohibited in the cobblestone old town. Every now and then a horse or donkey cart rumbles past and you feel transported back to the time of the gold rush, when Paraty was the end of the "Caminho do Ouro", the Gold Trail. On this more or less paved way through the jungle the gold was brought from the hinterland to the harbor to be shipped to Portugal. Directly behind the city begins the Atlantic rainforest, also this area falls under the UNESCO protection. Experience a surprisingly diverse fauna on a hike through the impressive nature. More than half of Brazil's endemic bird species live here. Sloths and howler monkeys hang in the trees, and the jaguar and puma also find peace here to slowly recover, but are rarely sighted.
Sailing professionals can head outside the big bay for blue-water cruising on the Atlantic, and a bit further south to another base on the coast of Brazil, or start from here: Ubatuba.

Rio de Janeiro, more than just carnival

Rio de Janeiro, the loud, colorful and lively city whose name inevitably brings to mind carnival and soccer, is only about 60 nautical miles from Angra dos Reis. Surfers are drawn to Recreio dos Bandeirantes, an outlying district of Rio. Here, a 10-kilometer-long sandy beach stretches out with Atlantic waves ideal for surfing and equipment for beach volleyball players. In front of Rio, the archipelago of the Cagarras Islands is also immediately visible. Here nature lovers can go hiking or diving in search of white-bellied boobies, dolphins and tropical fish. From the islands you can see the popular Ipanema beach with the Sugarloaf Mountain in the background. Once you've reached Rio, the list of to-dos can get long: Take the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain, visit the Christ Statue, walk along the beach and promenade in the Copacabana district - the choices are endless.
