French Polynesia is a French overseas territory and consists of 118 scattered islands in the South Pacific. The best known are the islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora. Both belong to the Society Islands group. This also includes the island of Raiatea, which lies between the two islands. It has developed into the sailing center of the archipelago and is a good starting point to get to know this dream area. If you stay in the vicinity of the island and its neighboring island Tahaa, you will benefit from steady trade winds and mild temperatures during relaxed sailing. If you want to get to know other larger islands of the group, like Bora Bora to the northwest, you should be an experienced sailor, because the islands can be several hundred nautical miles away. Tahiti, for example, is located about 200 km from Raiatea.
The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and are a paradise for divers. Shipwrecks, caves and grottos can also be explored here. The islands are mostly covered by lush vegetation with some endemic plants. Some of the larger islands are of volcanic origin, and it is not uncommon for waterfalls to cascade down from the rugged mountain slopes. The small islands on the large islands are lined with white sandy beaches that flatten out into turquoise waters, and sheltered moorings can be found in the many bays.
For entry, German citizens need a valid passport, which should still be valid for 6 months at the start of the vacation. Up-to-date information, including vaccinations, can be found on the website of the German Foreign Office.
