The island of Raiatea belongs to the Society Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is located more than 200 km northwest of Tahiti and is the second largest island of the archipelago after Tahiti. You can reach the island by changing planes in Paris or Los Angeles or via Tahiti and Bora Bora to Uturoa, the capital and economic center of the island.

Raiatea is of volcanic origin and is surrounded by a coral reef together with its neighbor island Tahaa. In the lagoon there are many small islands with beautiful sandy beaches. The main island, on the other hand, is mountainous with waterfalls and deep bays where you can find many anchorages surrounded by beautiful nature. It is mainly populated on the coast, inland nature takes over. If you like hiking, you will find a variety of endemic plants. Alternatively, you can get an impression of the inland and experience the lush nature of the island by boat (guided tour), namely via the Faaroa River in the east. Here you can also do a kayak tour.
After the settlement of Raiatea from Tahiti around 200 BC, it developed into the religious center of the Society Islands. There are several cult sites that are well preserved, such as Taputapuatea, the main cult site of the archipelago, in the southeast, or Tainuu on the northwest coast.
Divers can discover the shipwreck of the three-master Nordby, which sank here around 1900, in addition to caves, grottos and coral reefs on the northeast coast of the island. It is located near the Pearl Beach resort at a depth of about 20 meters.
On the small neighboring island of Tahaa, you can visit farms that grow black pearls in Haamene or Apu Bay. However, the island is best known for its cultivation and export of vanilla. On the various vanilla plantations around Tiva you can learn more about the special production process. For hiking enthusiasts, Mount Ohiri offers a beautiful view over the island.
Experienced sailors can continue their trip northwest from Tahaa to Bora Bora. There you can stop in the only town Vaitape, relax on countless beaches, go snorkeling or diving.
