From north to south and from east to west the Algarve offers more than 200 kilometers of varied coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. As different as the coastline is in appearance, so diverse is the sailing area in terms of its requirements. Experienced and adventurous sailors, as well as families and beginners will get their money's worth. The south coast is well developed for tourism. Hotels, bars and restaurants are well prepared for tourists. The inland and the west coast are less developed and offer nature lovers and individual vacationers, among other things with the nature reserve Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, a quiet backdrop for vacationing.
For a sailing vacation, the southern Algarve is particularly well developed. With harbors in Sagres, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Faro and always good anchorage possibilities in between, there are short legs and excellent supply possibilities.

If you are looking for sportive sailing in Portugal and want to combine the trip with a city trip, you can also start from the capital Lisbon or the even more northern city Porto. The island groups of the Azores and Madeira with the yacht harbor in Funchal also belong to Portugal and offer sailing professionals varied landscapes and divers a species-rich underwater world.

The West - The wild face of the Algarve

From Cape Cabo de São Vicente near Sagres, the southwesternmost tip of Europe, to Odeceixe, the northern end of the Algarve, the rougher side of this sailing region is revealed. 52 kilometers of rugged rocky coastline facing the sea. The Atlantic shows here, more than at the south coast, its wild side. On the route there is no protected harbor after Sagres, just before the cape, until Sines. This route is therefore only recommended to experienced sailors. The coastal region, also called the rocky Algarve, is sparsely populated along this route. The steep coast opens again and again to small bays, whose beaches are very popular especially with surfers. The even and not too high waves at Praia do Amado are especially suitable for beginners and the consistent waves at Praia da Cordoama are among the most popular in the Algarve. The entire length of the western coastline up to Burgau (west of Lagos) is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. This nature reserve, which covers a total of 75,000 hectares, is home to many of Portugal's reptile, amphibian and bird species, including large birds such as ospreys and white storks. These find protected nesting sites in the coastal cliffs.

The end of Europe - Cabo de São Vicente

Revered by the Romans as a sacred place where the gods dwell and the sun sinks into the sea, Cape Cabo de São Vicente has retained its magic as the "end of the world" for a long time. Even in the 15th century, when Henry the Navigator built the Fortaleza de Sagres maritime school here, this was the end of the known world. The coast drops steeply into the sea up to 70 meters. Seagulls glide over the cliffs, jackdaws climb up the steep slopes and with a bit of luck you can spot a cormorant or two on the waves down in the sea.
Here you can enjoy the last bratwurst before America and then visit the lighthouse with the strongest beacon in all of Europe. In 1846, a beacon was first established on the cape to show sailors the way.

Southern Algarve - sandy beaches as far as the eye can see

On a yacht charter along the Southern Algarve you will experience the quieter side of the Atlantic. From the cape to Albufeira, where there is also a well-developed marina, the picture still predominates, which one already knows from the west: Rugged rocky coast with figures imaginatively worked out by nature, as for example at Ponta da Piedade near Lagos. This steeply to the sea sloping headland adorns several postcards, a motive which should have seen each holiday-maker in the Algarve - particularly from the water a dreamlike sight. It is worthwhile to make a trip with the dinghy between the scattered rocks in the sea to discover hidden grottos.
From Albufeira to the mouth of the Guadiana there are more than 40 miles of sandy beaches along the coast, the so-called sandy Algarve. The lagoon landscape before Faro is well navigable and attracts with dream beaches and good conditions for kite surfing. The Ria Formosa Nature Park is also located here. With a labyrinth of channels, small islands and sandbanks, it stretches along the coast between Vale do Garrão and Vila Nova de Cacela. Migratory birds find a protected resting place here and the beaches of this section, such as the one at Ilha Deserta (Ilha Barreta), are especially popular with families.
You can also take a detour into the Rio Guadiana, the border river between Portugal and Spain, as it is open for sailing. It offers a nice change from sailing on the sea and the small river ports in Alcoutim (Portugal) and Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Spain) offer a nice possibility for a trip ashore.
