Lisbon, picturesquely located on the Portuguese Atlantic coast, attracts not only with its rich culture and history, but also with optimal sailing conditions. The mouth of the Tagus River offers an impressive starting point for sailing trips that can be made along the coast of Portugal. In the immediate vicinity are enchanting towns such as Cascais and Oeiras, which attract sailors with their marinas and beaches. From Lisbon, you can take a route north that takes you as far as charming Porto. Sailors who prefer the more southerly course face the higher demands of Portugal's Atlantic coast, due to more challenging wind conditions and currents. A calmer alternative with sailing conditions well suited for less experienced sailors is offered by Portugal in the south along the Algarve.

Atlantic magic: sailing adventures along the west coast of Portugal

Not far from Lisbon, also at the mouth of the Tagus, are Cascais and Oeiras, two more well-developed marinas. If you start south along the picturesque coast you will encounter the Costa da Caparica, a dream destination for all beach lovers. Sailing further south, you will be greeted by the picturesque fishing village of Sesimbra, a wonderful place to stay. The next leg will take you to the charming town of Setúbal, located right next to the stunning Arrábida Natural Park. Across from Setúbal, just a short crossing over the Sado River, the Troía Peninsula awaits with its gorgeous beaches and archaeological sites.

Although it is a short detour, you should not miss the opportunity to visit Sintra. A short country trip will take you to the majestic palaces and gardens of this inland gem. After heading back to the coast, you'll set course northwest and soon reach Peniche, known for its impressive fortress and ideal surfing conditions. Further north lies Nazaré, a place known for its gigantic waves. Finally, to cap off your trip, you will reach Figueira da Foz, a vibrant port city that will captivate you with its beauty and maritime atmosphere.
Please note that sailing along the west coast of Portugal has its pitfalls and challenges sailors. Beginners should switch to another sailing area, such as the Algarve in the south of the country.

Those planning a route north to Porto on the Spanish border should allow at least 14 days for the round trip.
