Funchal is our base on the island of Madeira. Since the archipelago of Madeira belongs to Portugal, an identity card valid for at least 6 months is sufficient for entry. The northeast trade wind brings steady winds around 4 to 5 Beaufort. Air and water temperatures are mild all year round from around 20 degrees, which is why the island is a worthwhile vacation destination all year round. Marinas and anchorages are only available on the south side, also the weather is warmer and drier here, while it is more rainy in the north. But there is always plenty to do on the island. The varied landscapes, such as steeply sloping coasts, mountain panoramas and colorful vegetation - Madeira is also called the flower island - want to be explored on hikes or bike tours. There are hiking trails to the summit of Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest mountain at just over 1800 meters, or through fragrant forests of laurel, eucalyptus and acacia trees. The island and its neighbors Porto Santo and the Ilhas Desertas are of volcanic origin, like the Canary Islands and Azores. There are no natural beaches, but here and there they have been helped. Nevertheless, you can swim in the North Atlantic, in natural pools in the lava rock, which are fed with seawater.
The capital Funchal is also colorful. The old town is a popular destination, where you walk past colorful houses, flowers and trees in small alleys. Along the way, you'll pass numerous cafes and restaurants. At the Mercardo los Lavradores you can buy local products and food. The small town of Monte is located above the capital. By cable car you can go up to the town and experience a beautiful view over the capital from here. The botanical garden Jardim do Monte Palace offers a colorful display of exotic and native plants. Close to the capital is also the international airport, which can be reached from Germany in about 4 hours.
