Not in the mood for a winter break from sailing? Explore the Canary Islands from our bases in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote – all year round. Belonging to Spain, the islands are only about a four-hour flight away. The individual islands of the archipelago have a different character, so that a varied Törn results. Due to few marinas, longer distances and strong winds as well as diving effects between the islands, the area is more suitable for experienced crews. Crews who want to spend a sporty day are just as right here as crews who want to combine island hopping with sightseeing.

Climate: subtropical with temperatures between 17 and 30 degrees
. Winds: northeast trade
Sailing season: all year

The islands are located off the coast of Morocco and thus topographically to Africa, but politically to Spain and the European Union. Therefore German citizens only need their identity card to enter the country. Also the exchange of money is unnecessary with the euro as currency. The official language is Spanish, but since tourism plays a major role, English and often German are spoken in the resorts.

The Canary Islands have a year-round mild climate and steady winds, making them ideal for cruising even in winter. However, it is also a demanding sailing area and not suitable for beginners. Sporty sailing conditions are created by strong winds and jet effects, which can be another 2 to 3 Beaufort. Since there are only a few marinas, the distances are also greater. But experienced crews will have their sailing fun in this area. Other island groups of this kind are also the Azores to the northwest and Madeira, which belong to Portugal, and the Cape Verde Islands to the south.

Fuerteventura is especially for beach lovers the destination in the Canary Islands with long, wide sandy beaches. At Playa de Morro Jable you can anchor directly. Elena Krivorotova/AdobeStock

On Lanzarote, on the northeastern edge of the archipelago, the Canary Islands' origins are still most evident. In Timanfaya National Park, you pass through a lunar landscape with mountains of fire that shine in a variety of colors. Through the dark underground, the traditional white villages shine at you from afar, as well as the green of the vineyards and the aloe plant, which is popular here. Culturally, the island is characterized by the architecture, sculptures and art of the Lanzaroteño César Manrique, which one encounters everywhere. You can also include the neighboring island of Fuerteventura in your trip.

The capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, is the largest city in the Canary Islands. In its old town you can find magnificent houses from the founding period of the city. Christopher Columbus also visited here and a museum is dedicated to his life and travels. Gran Canaria combines different landscapes in a small area due to different microclimates. Here you can walk on volcanic craters, swim in the sea behind desert-like dunes, walk through gorges as in the canyons of Arizona and hike through subtropical valleys. In the more touristy south are long sandy beaches like Maspalomas with its dune landscapes and Playa del Inglés.

Even on the largest island, Tenerife, the north is blessed with more rain than the south. The reason for this is the mountainous region around the island's landmark, the Teide volcano. Teide National Park is a popular destination and here you can go hiking on various routes. Black sand beaches like Playa de La Arena in Puerto de Santiago or palm beaches like Las Teresitas invite you to sunbathe and swim. From Tenerife you can also reach the nearby islands of La Gomera and El Hierro as well as the easternmost island of the Canaries La Palma.

Especially from the water the Canary Islands are impressive, like here in front of the steep cliffs and the mountain scenery at Puerto de Las Nieves on Gran Canaria. Freesurf/AdobeStock
