The third largest island of the Canary Islands is located between Tenerife and Fuerteventura. It combines a variety of landscapes, vegetation and fauna in a small area, because it has different microclimates. That is why it is often called a miniature continent with its volcanoes, dune landscapes, canyons, laurel forests as well as subtropical valleys. North of the mountains around the highest point Pico de las Nieves, the climate is more humid than in the south. The island has declared numerous areas as natural parks, which can be explored on hiking routes. The coast is characterized in the west by rugged cliffs and steep coast with small bay intersections, in the east by many beaches and water sports spots as well as small fishing villages.

The capital of the island, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the largest city of the Canary Islands with over 380,000 inhabitants and therefore offers all kinds of activities besides shopping streets also museums, theaters and parks. The old town Vegueta with the cathedral Santa Ana in the center is surrounded by magnificent buildings from different styles. Adjacent to Vegueta is the Triana neighborhood. The streets here are also lined with beautiful houses from the Art Nouveau period, and a stroll through San Telmo Park is also worthwhile. The Casa de Colón is dedicated in exhibitions to the navigator Christopher Columbus, who also visited the governor of the city here in this building on his voyage to America. On display are exhibits related to his voyages and the Canary Islands at that time. To the north of the city is the port district and the Castillo de la Luz, which houses a maritime museum and a marine museum. From the capital is a trip to Bandama crater, the largest crater on the island. The crater can also be hiked around. In the north of the crater, it is also possible to visit dwelling and storage caves of the island's indigenous people.
Southwest of the capital is the town of Teror. It is an important place of pilgrimage of the island to the Holy Mary and reflects the Canary architecture, the place is one of the most original of the island. Magnificent wooden balconies, colorful facades with nestled columns and ornaments decorate the houses.

The Cénobio in the Valerón Valley is a collection of some 300 caves carved into the soft stone by the island's indigenous people. They were used as granaries and storage areas. It is the largest site of this type among others on the island. There are also cave dwellings in the high village of Artenara in the interior of the island.
In the south, the drier and wind-protected part of the island, are the tourist centers. Here are the wide sandy beaches like Maspalomas, which is also known for its dune landscape, or the city of Playa del Inglés, where there are also shopping and nightlife possibilities. In the south of the island you reach the fishing village Puerto de Mogán. Due to canals leading into the town, it is also called "Little Venice". Despite tourism and adjacent new quarter, the place has kept its charm. There is also a modern marina next to the old fishing port.

From Gran Canaria, the neighboring islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura can also be included in the cruise. Alternatively, in the Canary Islands you can also start from Tenerife or Lanzarote.

Puerto de Mogán is more tranquil than the capital or Playa del Inglés. The "little Venice" is therefore popular with family vacations. ©enchanting views/AdobeStock
