The Cape Verde Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean about 600 km from the West African coast at the level of Senegal. They are a part of Macaronesia, which also includes the Azores, Canary Islands and Madeira. The Cape Verde Islands are divided into the islands above and below the wind (Ilhas do Barlavento and Sotavento, respectively): 15 islands, 9 of which are inhabited. Like the Canary Islands, Cape Verde is also a volcanic archipelago. The temperatures are balanced around 25 degrees all year round and the water temperature also fluctuates slightly around this value, making the area ideal for winter cruises. Rainfall is low, mainly between August and October. In summer the winds are weaker than in winter, around 2 to 4 Beaufort, otherwise the northeast trade wind can come along with 7 Beaufort. Between the islands there can also be jet effects and there are longer distances in between, where you sail on the open Atlantic. All in all, the sailing area is therefore challenging and sporty, just right for experienced sailors who want to experience a scenically varied region with friendly people and many water sports opportunities during the sailing breaks.
