Sal Island belongs to the archipelago of Cape Verde Islands. For decades it has been a popular destination for surfers, especially in the winter months. Also for diving Sal offers excellent conditions the rich underwater world of the archipelago can be explored from several dive centers. Compared to the Canaries mass tourism has not yet arrived in Cape Verde, the island of Sal is still the most touristy with the town of Santa Maria as a destination for package holidaymakers. Because on it the sun shines almost every day and the long sandy beaches invite to sunbathe and swim.

Palmeira is a small town in the west of the island of Sal. It is located in a protected bay and has a harbor, which can also be approached by larger ships. While the harbor is rather a transhipment point of goods for the island, the center of the town is more original. In the market hall one can supply oneself for the trip. The capital of the island, Espargos, is about 4 kilometers away and offers everything that is not available in the smaller towns. The international airport is also located here. From the capital, it is worthwhile to visit the "Blue Eye", a rocky breakthrough into the sea, where the water shines bright blue, especially at noon. Natural pools have formed in the basalt rock around it, where you can swim. As the name of the island suggests, salt played a major role. The old salt works are still preserved, worth seeing is especially the salt works of Pedra de Lume, which is located in a volcanic crater and where you can swim and cure like in the Dead Sea. There is also a saltworks near Santa Maria on the south coast. The place is the actual tourist center of the island, where hotels for package tourists have settled. Sal is especially popular with surfers and divers due to steady winds, almost only sunny days a year and a rich underwater world as well as the one or other shipwreck. There are also many white sandy beaches for sunbathing and swimming. From Sal it is also not far to the neighboring island of Boa Vista, where similar conditions prevail. Both are more sparse in vegetation than the other islands, as they receive little rainfall, and thus the landscape is dominated by deserts and dunes with isolated oases.
