Mindelo is located in the northwest of the island of São Vicente, the second largest island in Cape Verde, and has over 75,000 inhabitants. It is located in the bay Baía do Porto Grande, which is actually an extinct crater. In the past, the city gained importance for the supply of coal on the transatlantic routes, and also as a switching station for the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The bourgeois town and merchant houses as well as the governor's palace still bear witness to the former boom. Today, large cruise ships dock in the port city. On weekends, you can also go out and listen to traditional morna, similar to Portuguese fado, and various live music in bars. There are also cafes and restaurants, as well as discos. The handicraft market on Praça Estrela gathers products from neighboring African countries. The second largest city on the islands is considered the cultural center of the country. If you are here at Carnival time, you can experience a spectacle and the islanders' desire to party. The island itself is sparse in vegetation and characterized by volcanic mountains as well as dunes. Popular beaches include Praia da Laginha, Praia do São Pedro and Baía das Gatas, where it is also worth visiting the fishing village of Salamansa. The island surrounds a variety of fish species that can be discovered by diving and snorkeling. In Calhau there is also a natural swimming pool between lava rocks, where you can take a protected plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. From the mountain Monte Verde you have a beautiful view over the city of Mindelo and the port. The island's airport is located about 10 kilometers from Mindelo.

From São Vicente you can easily explore the northwestern islands like Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, Branco and Raso as well as São Nicolau.
