Discover the authentic süden Sardinia from Cagliari. From the capital of Sardinia you can turn to the east side of the island with its long sandy beaches or head west to the Sulcitano archipelago with the islands of San Pietro and Sant´Antioco. The south promises places with far-reaching history such as Cagliari itself and Carloforte on San Pietro, beach vacations as well as a relaxing day away from the crowds. Therefore, the sun beds here are also cheaper than in the touristy north of the island. Anchorages and harbors in short distances provide many landing places on the coast. The high season brings relaxed winds, outside sporty sailors will find windier conditions. As in the north, watch out for shoals along the rocky coast.

Alternatively, you can charter in the south of Sardinia from Carloforte on the island of San Pietro.

Cagliari is located on the south coast of Sardinia, centrally located in a large bay. The airport is located only six kilometers west of the city. Direct flights from Munich, Cologne and Düsseldorf land here. The S-Bahn takes you to the main train station, which is located directly at the harbor with the marinas. Directly at the port you are also right in the center of the city, so you can go exploring on foot from here.

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and the largest city on the island with just over 150,000 inhabitants. The city's history dates back to the Phoenicians and it subsequently belonged to the Roman and Byzantine Empires, as well as the Spanish and Austrian Crowns. Walk through the old town, also called Castello, above the harbor. The alleys of the old town lead past buildings from the time of the Romans and the rule of Pisa. The city walls with their mighty towers from the 14th century are also still preserved, such as the Torre dell'Elefante or Torre di San Pancrazio. The stately changes can also be seen in the architecture, for example of the cathedral. Built in Romanesque-Pisan style from the outside, inside the Spaniards also brought in Baroque interiors. The crypt in the cathedral also reveals over 600 rosette decorations, all different in appearance. Here lie the remains of 300 Sardinian martyrs. From the bastion of San Remy you have a beautiful view of the Gulf of Cagliari. Here in the Cittadella die Musei, which used to be an armory, are housed the National Museum, the Pinacoteca, the Archaeological Museum and the Ethnographic Museum.

In the port district Marina used to live fishermen and sailors, even today it is a lively neighborhood with many restaurants and trattorias. Along Via Roma at the port you can already go shopping in boutiques and stores, the real shopping street is Via Manno with its branching streets. In the center of the city at the market of San Benedetto, the fish market takes place daily except Sundays, one of the largest in Italy. But it is not only fish that is sold here; vegetables, fruit and meat are also on sale. When you stop at restaurants, ask about the Sardinian dishes on the menu to get a taste of the island's own cuisine. On the outskirts of the neighborhood is the Botanical Garden for a stroll through the flora of the Mediterranean, Africa and America.

If you would like to take a beach day directly upon arrival, immediately southeast of Cagliari is the 8 kilometer long sandy beach Spiaggia del Poetto. Or you can visit the Molentargius Saline Nature Park, which lies between the city and the beach. Today, salt is no longer extracted in the saline landscape; instead, various species of birds, including flamingos, live here under protection. You can explore the park with its salt pans, lake and ponds on foot or on a bicycle, which you can rent at the information desk.
