Another base on the Norwegian west coast is Haugesund, which belongs to the Haugaland region. Like the more northerly Bergen, the city is an important commercial center of the region and the supply facilities are accordingly good. In the harbor area there are many restaurants and cafes where you can try local dishes. Haugesund has an airport on the island of Karmøy, which can be reached with mostly one change from Germany. The area offers many historical sights and great island and fjord scenery for outdoor activities. If you're in the area in August, you'll also find great events like the Sildajazz Festival, which has been around for over 30 years, and an international film festival.

The region plays a special role in the history of Norway and is rich in cultural monuments worth seeing. On the one hand, the name Norway is derived from the ship passage called Nordvegen here. On the other hand, it is also the place of origin of Harald Schoenhaar, who at the end of the 9th century united about 30 provinces to form the first Norwegian kingdom and made himself the first king. He is said to be buried north of the city center. There is a monument to him on a burial mound in Haraldshaugen. Not far from there is an old ting site, also from the period, which used to be a meeting place where justice was administered and decisions made. On the island of Karmøy was the royal court of Harald I. Here is also the Nordvegen History Center, which not only informs about backgrounds but also makes the time of the Vikings in the form of an open-air museum and with events experiencable and therefore especially interesting for families. In the south of the island there is also a special fishing village, Skudeneshavn. Many thousands of fishermen gathered here every year in the last century, as huge shoals of herring passed by here, for which the area is famous. The old wooden houses have been lovingly restored and shine in white. A museum yard shows the everyday life and living conditions of that time.

If you start from Haugesund, you will embark on waterways that are among the oldest traveled in the north. Off the coast are uninhabited and inhabited islands such as Utsira, a bird paradise that is home to over 300 different species. As with Bergen, there are several fjords here that can be navigated. The Åkrafjord, for example, flows between steeply rising mountains. Here, one of the most beautiful and highest waterfalls in the world plunges more than 600 meters into the depths, Langfoss. The entrance to the Lysefjord has probably been inhabited since 1000 BC. Parts of a village from the Iron Age were found here. A museum village and a visitor center show how people lived at that time. Between bright granite rocks, the waterway continues to the popular Preikestolen, a rock pulpit that hangs over 600 meters above the fjord and offers a great view. Not far from the mouth of the Lysefjord is the city of Stavanger. Small alleys wind through the old town between brightly painted wooden houses. The city has museums with familiar themes, such as a maritime museum, as well as more unusual ones, such as the Norwegian Canning Museum or the Norwegian Oil Museum. If you catch warm and sunny weather, you can also enjoy a nice drink on one of Norway's longest sandy beaches, the Solar Beach, and still feel a little bit of southern flair.
