Like its Nordic neighbors Finland and Sweden, the coast of Norway was formed in the Ice Age to form an archipelago, where you can sail in fjords between islands. In this idyllic landscape also lies the beautiful city of Bergen with its wooden houses from the Hanseatic period and its rich history. The real natural spectacle here, however, is the fjord landscape that stretches 180 kilometers inland along the Hardanger Fjord. Bizarre rock formations on the high peaks, snow-covered domes and glaciers, powerful waterfalls but also small villages, lovely orchards and mountain pastures form a scenery in which man suddenly seems very small.

Hjellestad is a district of Bergen, located just a few kilometers from the airport. Flights from Germany are usually with a change in Oslo. A highlight of the area is the charming city of Bergen, located a bit further. With over 270,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Norway, but despite its size, it has retained its cozy character. It gets crowded here when one of the many cruise ships docks, on whose route the city lies. Otherwise, it is not the tourists who enliven the town, but the students of the university, who give the historic town a modern, young atmosphere. There are many small cafes, restaurants, stores, handicrafts and galleries in the city. For a long time Bergen was an important trading port of the Hanseatic League. As a western port in Europe, it went from here to the rest of the world. A whole row of wooden houses on the quay of the natural harbor Vågen still bears witness to this. The part of town known as Tyske Bryggen has fallen victim to several fires in the past, but the houses have been rebuilt again and again according to the old model and are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Off Bergen lies a whole series of archipelagos, from large to small, from green overgrown to barren. On some of them you will find picturesque fishing villages. The archipelago offers sheltered waters, but navigation requires attention in the sometimes narrow channels and shallow shores. Not to be missed is a trip in one of the fjords that wind their way out of the interior. Here, man becomes really small next to nature. The Hardanger Fjord, for example, is one of the longest fjords in the world and is over 700 meters deep. Towards the mouth of the fjord lie a number of islands such as Stord, Bomlø and Varaldsøy. In the fjord, one comes across small villages along the shore. Even orchards with apples, pears and plums are cultivated here, so you can also buy fresh fruit. For hikers there are many routes that lead past waterfalls and historical sites up to great panoramas. Anglers also appreciate the region and, depending on the weather, will find a good catch either in the archipelago or in the fjords, for example cod, ling, flatfish or pollack.
