On Faial contrasts meet – in the west barren ash desert, in the east lush green landscapes. The capital Horta shines with its white houses and gathers Atlantic crossers and sailors from all over the world in its harbor. Only half an hour away is the island of Pico with the highest mountain in Portugal, which however looks most impressive from Faial. Steady winds, beautiful hiking routes, natural swimming pools, varied landscapes, few tourists and its central location in the Azores archipelago make the island a worthwhile destination for relaxation seekers, nature lovers and active vacationers among experienced sailors.

Yacht charter Ilha do Faial
From our base Ilha do Faial the central part of the Azores, the Grupo Central, can be explored. On the island of Faial, the last eruption of a volcano was not so long ago, in the 1950s. Researchers had the opportunity to collect data and observations on it, which today can be shared at the Visitor Center. To escape a catastrophe, some of the island's inhabitants emigrated to the United States. Their story is also told in the exhibitions. The center also informs about how the Azores were formed. Around the said volcano Capelinho, the landscape is still a moonscape, and at the old lighthouse you can still see how much ash fell back then. Otherwise, the island is green like the other Azores. The hydrangea bushes, which stand out here everywhere with their blue, have also given Faial the name Ilha Azul, the blue island. The island can be explored on hikes, for example to the highest mountain of the island, the Cabeco Gordo with its just over 1000 meters. It is actually a crater and from the top you can look into the green Caldeira. For swimming there are natural pools as well as small bays with sandy beaches.
The capital of the island is Horta. The airport is located about 10 kilometers from the capital. In Horta the ships stopped before Atlantic crossings and also today the island is used as a stopover by sailors and cruisers, so many nationalities and histories meet in the port. In the center, many historic buildings from centuries past are also still preserved and beautifully restored.
From Faial it is not far to the neighboring islands of the central group Pico and San Jorge. The volcanic cone of Pico looks especially impressive when seen from Faial. You can learn more about the other islands on our Azores page. Another base on the archipelago is located on the island of São Miguel, which belongs to the eastern group of islands with Santa Maria.
