Yacht charter São Miguel
São Miguel is the largest island of the Azores, where also the capital of the archipelago, Ponta Delgada, is located. Near the capital is also the international airport, from Germany direct flights to here take less than 5 hours. São Miguel is located in the southeastern part of the archipelago together with the oldest island of the archipelago, Santa Maria.
Due to volcanism, two islands became one long ago, and forces are still at work under Sao Miguel. In the caldeiras, such as Furna Valley or Sete Cidades, there are lakes and hot thermal springs where you can also bathe. If there is not fog or clouds hanging around the Boca do Inferno in Sete Cidades, you can enjoy a beautiful view into the volcanic basin with the two lakes, which sometimes shimmer green, sometimes blue. The climate also offers good conditions for a special cultivated product in Europe: tea. The tea plantations, for example in Cha Gorreana, can also be visited, with subsequent tasting. Especially hikers are attracted to the green island, routes lead for example through dense forest as in Caldeira Velha and on the way you pass waterfalls and hot springs. Along the roads and paths, lush hydrangea bushes are quite typical.
The capital Ponta Delgada offers a lot of supply and beyond. In addition to cafes and restaurants, there are also museums and places to go out. The Museu Carlos Machada informs about the history and culture of the islands. The townscape is characterized by alleys with colorful houses and several churches. In the large harbor everything from cruise ships to small fishing boats meet. There are also stores, cafes and restaurants as well as an open-air swimming pool with sea water. The mighty Forte de São Braz was built as protection against pirate attacks.
On the neighboring island of Santa Maria, there are also various hiking routes as well as beaches with seawater pools.
An alternative starting point to São Miguel is the island of Faial, which is in the middle group. From here you are close to the neighboring islands of San Jorge, Pico, Terceira and Graciosa. More information and tips about the other islands can be found on our Azores page.
