Houseboats Neukalen

The houseboat base, from which you start your vacation on a houseboat from Neukalen, is located in Mecklenburg Vorpommern and belongs to the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. It is located directly on the banks of the Teterower Peene River and has held the official title of Peene Town since 2012. Both the Mecklenburgische Schweiz Nature Park and the Kummerower See Nature Park border the town, so there is still the opportunity to extend your vacation on land in particularly beautiful natural landscapes before or after your start. Neukalen was built in 1281 near a predecessor settlement (Altkahlen). Even today, the circular structure with streets running at right angles to each other around the church building of St. John in the center is still recognizable in the old town. The single-nave Gothic brick building, as it can still be visited today, dates from the 15th century and houses one of the oldest organs in Mecklenburg and was built by the well-known organ builder David Baumann. The town's former schoolhouse, built in 1863, is an exemplary Tudor-style building, and for railroad enthusiasts, the town's former train station houses a railroad museum. If you are traveling with children, then take advantage of the unusual opportunity to experience the Mecklenburg Switzerland Nature Park on a disused section of track between Neukalen and Schorrentin with a trolley using your muscle power.

After a stroll through the town, take the opportunity to discover the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead out of the city and offer the opportunity to exercise, surrounded by unique moorland landscapes. If you have a little time, visit the Cistercian monastery of Dargun (about 12 kilometers from Neukalen). The attached museum offers a brief overview of the regional history and in the former monastery brewery, a bistro offers the opportunity to fortify yourself.

For a carefree start from the base in Neukalen, the town offers you all the necessary supply possibilities. In addition, beautiful routes open up from here for the most diverse requirements, on which you can sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Without sport boat license: also for beginners an ideal sailing area - the Kummerow Lake

Not far from Neukalen, accessible via the Teterower Peene, lies the Kummerower See. This recreational area has a total water surface of 30 km2 and is thus the eighth largest lake in Germany.Among passionate anglers, the lake is known for its abundance of fish. From eel to pikeperch, many native fish species can be found here, try your fishing luck from the houseboat. While you enjoy the peace and quiet around you while fishing and completely immerse yourself in the nature of Lake Kummerow, you may also discover a white stork or a family of otters. Both animal species are native here and find a protected habitat in the "Nature Park Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow". The small villages and towns around the lake offer you enough program if you feel like it. On the western shore in Salem, not far from Neukalen, you can get an overview of the lake from the local lookout point, easily reached on foot from the harbor. Or enjoy a meal in the local panorama restaurant overlooking the lake.

In the southeast of the lake lies Kummerow. Founded by Slavs as early as the 5th century AD, it is still a place of interest today. Especially a visit to the Kummerow castle from the 18th century, which was lavishly restored from 2011 and today houses a photo exhibition is an experience. Another castle, originally from the 13th century but rebuilt in a slightly different form after a fire at the beginning of the 20th century, is the castle in Sommersdorf. Especially in autumn, usually at the beginning of October, in the so-called castle autumn, a visit is worthwhile. There, changing cultural events take place in the castles and manor houses on the lake, and the time-honored buildings are put in a special light.

Sporty houseboat vacationers can rent a canoe in Sommersdorf or try out a ride over the waves on a windsurfing board at the local surfing school. In the very north of Lake Kummerow in Verchen, you also have the option of renting canoes to add a little sporty variety to the peace and relaxation that a houseboat vacation on Lake Kummerow brings. Here you can also take part in a guided hike through the "great Rosin", a lowland moor typical of the Peene Valley. From here, the Peene flows leisurely for 85 kilometers until it flows into the Peene River east of Anklam. In the process, the landscape has only a slight gradient, which is why the Peene flows slowly and leisurely through the area, which is predominantly designated as a nature reserve. This characteristic and because the river flows in large parts through protected and untouched areas, has earned the river the nickname "Amazon of the North". Discover on your houseboat vacation Neukalen one of the largest contiguous low moorland areas in Central and Western Europe and the flora and fauna there. Most of the Peene valley is under nature protection, to continue to offer the necessary protection to the animals living here and the original fauna, certain restrictions apply. Thus, oxbow lakes and peat pits may not be navigated and entering the shore areas is mostly prohibited, but anchoring for the night is allowed. Information on the applicable regulations can be found at the information station "Abenteuer Peenetal" in Verchen, or here.

From here on, you will need a sport boat license Binnen to continue your journey. The town is located at the confluence of the Peene, Tollense and Trebel rivers and is a popular recreational area. The area was already populated during the Neolithic Age, which can still be seen today in partially preserved megalithic sites. For example the megalithic grave Upost near Warrenzin. Take a trip by bike (about 45 minutes each way) and discover this relic from the early settlement history of this area. Not only those interested in history can experience the history of this region up close here and afterwards with a visit to the historic old town of Loitz from the 13th century. Enjoy the ride past untouched moor meadows, discover the traces of beavers on the shore again and again and be surprised by the resident eagles. The trip on the natural river with only a very slight gradient is quiet and offers you the opportunity to relax completely.

Once you have reached Anklam, you will have many opportunities to counteract the relaxation and tranquility of the ride.
