Directly opposite the town in the Thracian Sea lies the island of Thasos. It is one of the greenest islands in Greece and has beautiful beaches on the coast. To the north is the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, which dates back to pre-Greek times and is the site of the statue of Nike, the goddess of victory, now in the Louvre in Paris. From the well-preserved Byzantine castle from the 15th century you have a beautiful view over the city and the bay. The aqueduct is also worth seeing.
