From Marina Nikiti you can explore the coast of the peninsula of Chalkidiki, south of Thessaloniki, popularly known as the trident of Poseidon. It divides in the south into the three headlands of Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos, forming two large bays. Kassandra has many sandy beaches in a flat landscape and is more touristy than the other two arms. Sithonia, on the other hand, is more mountainous and has a steep coast. Here, however, there are many small bays to look out for, which are difficult to reach from land. Athos has a special status and is an autonomous monastic republic. There are many monasteries here, they are part of the UNESCO world heritage. On the coast there is the Holy Mountain Athos, which rises 2000 meters steeply from the sea. A visit to the monasteries here must be applied for in advance at the pilgrimage office and is allowed only to men. Boats with mixed crews are also allowed to approach the coast in front of the mountain only to a certain distance. However, if one adheres to this, one can view the monasteries from the water. Hikers will find excursion opportunities in the mountains in the central country.
