The Gulf of California, also called Lake Cortez, is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean that belongs to Mexico. Due to its sheltered location between the mainland and the elongated peninsula of Baja California, there are calm waters for sailing, so that the area is also suitable for less experienced sailors. Those who sail towards the open Pacific Ocean should be experienced in blue water sailing. Due to the year-round mild air and water temperatures, the area is worth a trip at any time of the year. In spring and autumn the winds are gentler, around 4 Beaufort, while in summer and winter it can be stormier.

Baja California has low humidity and temperatures can climb to 40 degrees inland. Therefore, above water, the coastline presents itself as desert landscapes with low vegetation from which various species of cacti stand out. Many of the plants that grow here are endemic. As reduced as the land appears above water, the sea is all the more rich and unique. Divers and snorkelers can discover a great variety of species here. Off the peninsula there are very good conditions to see whales, rays, sea lions and turtles. Some animals, like humpback whales, pass by here on their migration routes, for others it is a permanent habitat. Whales flock here mainly from January to March. The Gulf is also home to the endangered Gulf bottlenose dolphin.

A lot of resorts have sprung up on the southern tip of the peninsula, and it's accordingly lively here. Cabo San Lucas has become one of the largest beach resorts in the country. Those looking for nightlife will therefore find a wider range of options here. Playa El Médano is also home to many bars and restaurants. Off the coast live manta rays and sea lions, at Gordon Banks also whale and hammerhead sharks.
The central part of the peninsula is quieter. Here one encounters the Mexican desert landscape with its low vegetation and a multitude of cacti that tower like sculptures in the barren landscape. In the bay Bahía Concepción there are sandy beaches and lagoons where you can dive, snorkel and swim. Further north is the small town of Loreto. It was once founded by Jesuits and is one of the oldest settlements in California. A museum informs about the history of the place. There are also over 30 other islands in the gulf. The two largest are Isla Angel de la Guarda and Isla Tiburon and are located in the northern part of the gulf.
