La Paz is our base in the northwest of Mexicoon the Pacific coast. It is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur, which together with Baja California forms a peninsula. The peninsula stretches from the border with America parallel to the Mexican mainland to the south. In between lies the Gulf of California, a secondary sea of the Pacific Ocean, which also stretches 1100 km southward and is home to a unique underwater world.

Near La Paz is the international airport Manuel Márquez de León. Flights from Germany usually go here with stops in the USA or Mexico. For the trip you should be well supplied in La Paz, because in other corners the supply structure is not necessarily given. However, the city is the economic center of the region, so you can find everything you need here. The city shows itself lively and colorful and is still Mexican compared to the cities in the south of the peninsula, where the Americans flock to vacation. On the Malecón beach promenade, you can take a walk and get a first impression of the seaside. A good preparation for the peculiarities of the region is the Museum of Natural History. Among other things, it displays a collection of fossils of marine mammals, birds and reptiles, estimated to be 3500 million years old. Just around La Paz there are also beautiful beaches and bays where it is possible to sunbathe and swim after a short drive, such as Playa el Tecolote or Punta Balandra. The beaches promise fine sand and turquoise waters.

In La Paz a lot of research is done in marine biology and environment. Therefore, ecotourism is widespread here, especially in relation to the sea. Some of the islands in the Gulf of California are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Gulf provides habitat for a wide variety of animal species in its different water zones. Jacques Cousteau called the Mar de Cortes the aquarium of the world because of its diversity of species in a small area. More than 850 species are at home here. Stingrays, whale sharks, sea lions, humpback sharks, fin whales, gray whales come along or migrate here.

Directly in front of La Paz are the islands Espiritu Santo and Partida. Special ecosystems have also developed in and around their desert-like landscape. Sea lions, turtles, dolphins and stingrays live off the coast, as well as gray whales seasonally. The desert landscape, through which one can also hike, is home to various small mammal species and reptiles. There are moorings in the bays and you can explore the hustle and bustle in the crystal clear water by snorkeling or diving.

This part of the Gulf is home to some of the best diving in the world. There are spots for beginners as well as for experienced divers. On Los Islotes, north of La Partida, hundreds of sea lions congregate, and you can also watch them perform elegant underwater maneuvers while snorkeling and diving. The offshore reef is home to a variety of tropical fish species, and seasonally you may also encounter shoals of giant fish. Likewise, La Reina off Cerralvo Island is a gathering place for large schools such as mackerel, tuna and bonito. Experienced divers can also discover a lot at El Bajo off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, for example different shark species like hammerheads and also rays. Dive centers on site offer day trips as well as equipment. But you don't have to dive to enjoy the underwater life, snorkelers can also get up close and personal with whale sharks and sea lions. The best time for diving in the bay is from summer to autumn. The water temperatures are warm during this time and there are many large marine animals around. Since Baja California is heavily fished, you may consider experiencing the abundance of species by eye rather than culinary.
The Socorro Archipelago southwest of Baja California is also a unique diving destination. The islands are part of a protected area where many large fish and mammals live or come here to give birth, such as giant manta rays, sharks, humpback whales and whale sharks. Diving tours to the protected area are offered from Cabo San Lucas, mainly from November to July, because due to the location of the islands in the Pacific Ocean, they are also subject to hurricanes.

As an additional option you can also start your Mexico trip in Puerto Vallarta in the bay of Banderas.
