The town of Bar is located in the south of Montenegro, in the last major bay before the Albanian border, and has the largest port in the republic. Only four kilometers away is the old town of Bar, Stari Bar. After an earthquake in 1979, it was left as a ruined city and the new Bar was moved to the coast. Today, however, this old town is being repopulated, but time still seems to have stood still here. The aqueduct, which once supplied the city with water from Mount Rumija, is impressive. Also worth seeing are the Episcopal Palace, the Gothic Church of St. Catherine, the Castle of King Nikola and the Haj Nehaj Fortress. Bar experienced changing reigns under Byzantines, Ottomans, Italians, Hungarians and Yugoslavs, which are still reflected in the architecture of the ruins and preserved buildings. The town is also home to the oldest olive tree in the region, which is over 2000 years old.
Northeast of Bar inland is Lake Scutari with small islands and whose shores are lined with beaches, castles and villages. It is the largest lake in the Balkans and a nature reserve. The border between Montenegro and Albania runs through it. During the migratory season it is a bird paradise and one of the largest nesting sites on the European continent. If you continue south, you can stop for a swim at the beach in Ulcinj and sail on to Albania.
Heading north you will come to one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic, Budva. Once the place was located on an island, but it is now connected to the mainland. It was also destroyed by the earthquake, but was rebuilt in the same place. In the bay of Budva lies the largest island of Montenegro, Sveti Nikola. In the south of the bay there is also one of the most famous islands of the country, Sveti Stefan. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway and today it is the Adriatic Monaco. It is completely dedicated to guests and tourists, but tries to keep the historical flair of the former fishing village. Further north you reach the entrance of the Bay of Kotor with ancient towns like Tivat, Risan and Kotor.
