Opatija was one of the traditional, fashionable seaside resorts of Austria-Hungary. Besides Sissi and Franz, many artists and noblemen in the 19th century liked to spend their time in the residences, villas and hotels of the town, which still exude the flair of this era. Many of them have been extensively renovated in recent years and Opatija's coffeehouses have also regained their former splendor.
