The Ionian island, which was under Venetian rule for a long time, got the nickname "Flower of the East" from the Italians. It is very green and while in the west steep coast prevails, in the east there are the beautiful bays with sandy beaches and bright blue water. The Smuggler's Cove in Nagavio Bay, which is accessible only from the sea, is also popular. In the 80s, a ship with illegal cargo stranded here on the beach in stormy seas. The wreck still lies there today. The main town of the same name, Zakynthos, was almost completely destroyed after an earthquake in 1953, but was soon rebuilt. In the architecture you can still see the Venetian influence and churches like Agios Dionysios are worth a visit. On the way south you can stop in the tranquil village of Keri and enjoy the view from the lighthouse there. Nearby there are interesting rock formations and caves where you can snorkel or dive. In the south you can make a detour to the small island of Marathonisi. It has two reefs and beaches. A marine national park here is dedicated to the protection of the loggerhead turtle, which is threatened with extinction and has its nesting sites here. Therefore, some water sports are not allowed on certain beaches.
On a two-week cruise, you can sail as far north as Corfu, visiting the Ionian islands of Lefkada and Kefalonia and including some mainland stops.
