Genoa has direct flights from Germany and the airport is only a few kilometers away from the port Porto Antico di Genova, our base. The port alone is a highlight of the city. It was transformed in the early 1990s into a modern marina and a cultural center of the city. Close to the berths you will find the impressive Galata Maritime Museum, which will get you in the mood for your maritime vacation right away. The port is also home to one of the largest aquariums in Europe, the Acquario di Genova, where you can see larger animals such as dolphins, sharks and seals. From the port it is also just a few steps to the city center. Walking to Strade Nuovi, you will pass the palazzi, the magnificent noble palaces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Other streets with palaces include Via Baldi, Via Cairoli and Via Garibaldi. In the sprawling old town, you'll stroll through alleys, some of which are so narrow that you can pass things to each other from window to window. You can also visit the seat of the former Doge, the Palazzo Ducale. From Piazza de Ferrari you can take the metro back to the marina. You can also visit the birthplace of Christopher Columbus in Piazza Dante. In the typical black and white facade shows the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which is lavishly decorated inside according to the Baroque and is also worth a visit. You can get a panoramic view of the city from the Lanterna lighthouse at the harbor.
In Genoa's hinterland, the Apennine Mountains stretch out with small villages and form a contrast to the bustling coastal and cosmopolitan city.

The capital of Liguria is a good starting point for cruises in the Ligurian Sea and to the islands of Corsica as well as the Tuscan Archipelago with the island of Elba. Nearby southeast of the city, on the tip of a small headland, is Portofino. Once a fishing village, the small town has developed into a high-society meeting place, while retaining its coziness and charm. The fishermen's houses shine in vibrant colors, and while sipping an espresso in one of the cafes in the main square, you might spot many a Hollywood star who come here for commercial shoots, vacations or weddings. Hikers can visit the monastery of San Fruttuoso via beautiful trails. Divers can see a bronze statue of Christ underwater in the nearby national park and, if lucky, encounter a specimen of the large, whimsical moonfish.
A bit further southeast, you'll encounter a picturesque stretch of coastline called Cinque Terre, named for the five small towns that lie here. Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso nestle against the cliffs of the Apennine Mountains that drop into the sea. Impressive are also the vineyards planted here on the steep slopes. In contrast to the Amalfi Coast with its long sandy beaches and sun lounger meadows, this coastal strip is a national park.
