Yacht charter St. Vincent and the Grenadines
The islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines belong to the Windward Islands and the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The main island of St . Vincent and 32 other smaller islands are located between St. Lucia and Grenada and together form an independent island nation that is a member of the Commonwealth. Entry requires a passport, which must be valid for 6 months beyond the trip, and return or onward tickets. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days. Further and current information can be found on the website of the German Foreign Office.
The official language is English, payment is made with the Eastern Caribbean dollar. There are no direct flights to St. Vincent from Germany, but the island can be reached via Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia or Barbados.
Arrival, activities and discoveries for your yacht charter vacation
On St. Vincent you will land at the E.T. Joshua Airport, close to the city of Kingstown, which is the capital of both the state and the island. In the downtown area, you'll still encounter historic buildings from the colonial era, and Fort Charlotte, located right next to town on a mountain, also tells of the locals' rebellion against their British occupiers.
In the interior of the island, one encounters abundant nature with steep green mountains and tropical forest. A hike to the volcano Soufrière is recommended. Here you can still see the lava flows formed during its last eruption in 1979.
Our base, Blue Lagoon Marina, in the southeast of the island is ideal as a starting point for a cruise to the other Grenadine Islands. On St. Vincent, make sure you are well supplied for the trip, as the infrastructure on the smaller islands is not as good as on the other Caribbean islands. Anchorages around St. Vincent include Petit Byahaut, where diving is also good, and Cumberland Bay, a beautiful bay with a popular beach bar.
A yacht charter cruise in the Northern Grenadines
In the south of St. Vincent lies the island of Bequia . It is a tourist center of the Grenadines and very popular among sailors. In the west of the island yacht charterers will find a nice natural harbor in Admirality Bay or they can anchor off the town of Port Elisabeth. In the bay there are various dinghy moorings. Here you will find various restaurants and the stores selling locally made goods. An alternative in the south of Bequia is Friendship Bay, a safe anchorage that also offers a nice beach.
Mustique is a private island, but visitors are allowed to enter. It offers a spa and a bar with live music, Basil's Bar. Photos should be taken on the island only of the scenery, not of the residents, as Mustique is a retreat for celebrities. Only a limited number of houses are allowed to be built here. This suits both the inhabitants and nature. The waters around the island are a marine protected area, where fishing is also not allowed. National park fees are charged locally. The only anchorage is Britannia Bay in the west of the island.
In Canouan, yacht charterers must head to the southern half of the island to anchor, as the north consists of a closed resort. There are several anchorages on the west side, such as Rameau Bay and the larger Charleston Bay. On shore, you'll find well-stocked grocery stores and down-to-earth restaurants. To explore the island, it is a good idea to rent a golf cart. With this yacht charterers can also visit the east side of the island with its turquoise lagoon. In the southeast, near the airport, a new marina is under construction, where super yachts can dock.
The small archipelago of the Tobago Cays is a dream destination for yacht charterers in the Caribbean. The Horseshoe Reef, which spans the islands in a wide arc in the west, offers divers and snorkelers a unique underwater world with diverse reefs and coral gardens. The islands themselves are uninhabited except for lizards and birds. In the high season, however, you can buy from traveling merchants and in the evenings they even organize beach barbecues. If you are looking for long sandy beaches and palm idyll, you will also get your money's worth west of the Tobago Cays on the small island of Mayreau. Anchorages are located on the west side, for example in Saltwhistle Bay. There are also a few places to eat in the village.
North of Petite Martinique is the small private island Petit Saint Vincent, where an exclusive hotel complex is located. The only allowed access is the dinghy dock. Adjacent to this is a public area with beach, boutique, spa and beach bar. Sailors are welcome here. Otherwise, the island is reserved for hotel visitors. However, yacht charterers can explore the large coral reef that surrounds the island and a special beach experience is also a visit to the large sandbar Mopion in the northwest of the island, which can be reached by dinghy.
Union Island is the commercial center of the Southern Grenadines, so again there are good supply options here. To the east, yacht charterers can call at Clifton Harbour, which offers a market, various shopping opportunities, restaurants and bars. Snorkelers can anchor off Clifton right at the impressive reef and go exploring. More tranquil is the green Chatham Bay with a sandy beach on the west side. Alternatively, yacht charterers can anchor off Frigate Island in the south near the village of Ashton.
