Tromsø is the largest city in North-Norway and the last major station before the Arctic. From here the famous expeditions of Amundsen and Nansen started and it is no wonder that you can learn a lot about such adventures and the Arctic and life north of the Arctic Circle without having to go to this inhospitable part of nature. Tromsø itself lies sheltered behind several islands that can be navigated from here. Whoever visits the city and its surrounding islands will encounter a fantastic island, mountain and fjord landscape, which always presents itself differently depending on the light and temperature. Yacht charter Tromsø
Flights to Tromsø are mostly via Oslo, with scheduled buses and a direct airport bus to the city. The Gulf Stream keeps the water and air temperature relatively mild for the far north, for example, compared to Alaska, which is at the same altitude. From mid-May to mid-July, the midnight sun accompanies travelers. The best time to travel is from June to August, when there is a wider range of public transport and longer opening hours.
Tromsø was the starting point of famous polar expeditions. At the Polar Museum, run by the university, you can learn the successful and tragic stories of expeditions such as those of Nansen and Amundsen. The interactive Polaria Museum, on the other hand, provides information about the animals and themes of the Arctic. The Ice Sea Cathedral has a special architecture. The body looks like blocks of ice strung together, staged at night with a special lighting concept. The choir side bears one of the largest stained glass windows in Europe, showing the return of Jesus in bright colors. In the city you can also still discover old wooden houses and churches, such as the cathedral church, which were spared from destruction during World War II. The highlight, however, is the cable car ride up Storstein and the view it offers of the city and its island landscape.

Around the island Tromsøya there are many more islands to sail to in the fjords between them. The islands around Tromsø are less known than Lofoten, but here you can experience the range of Norwegian landscape in a small area.
Kvaløya is the closest island. Here is still a part of the city, but you are already "outdoors" and can go on one of the hiking routes. The island is crisscrossed by rivers and lakes and from the mountains there are beautiful views over the landscape. From the boat you can also already look out for the animal that gives the island its name: the whale. The waters around Tromsø are rich in herring and plankton, which is why whales like to stay here. So you may well encounter humpback whales and orcas in July and August. But not only in the sea, also in the air there is a lot to see. The islands are home to many bird species, such as puffins, cormorants, eider ducks and the majestic sea eagle.
In the south of the island of Senja lies the Ånderdalen National Park, where you can experience untouched native nature. Here are several hundred years old pines, old birch forest and in the bogs and on the mountains you can find special plant species. Also bigger mammals like moose and red foxes and about 90 different bird species live here. Not only for children is the Hulder- og Trollpark. Here you can meet the largest troll in the world, which has also made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
Turquoise water, white beaches - Sommarøy does not have its name for nothing, here could be a Caribbean feeling, were it not for the unsouthly temperatures. The island is home to a fishing village, which is also spread over the neighboring island of Hillesøy, and still lives from fishing as well as tourism.
Experienced sailors who bring more time with them can also sail further south to Lofoten.
