Yacht charter Portorosa

Portorosa is located on the north coast of Sicily and presents a comfortable infrastructure for sailors. The marina there is with more than 680 berths the largest sailing and motor yacht harbor on the whole island and offers with several stores, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets good supply for every cruise.

Consistent winds make the area a great cruising destination. In spring and autumn local strong winds must be expected.

Very close to the marina, in Tindari, is the excavation site of ancient Tyndaris, one of the last Greek city foundations in Sicily. The Teatro Greco from the 4th century BC, the basilica from the 1st century BC and some residential buildings still bear witness to this. But the real highlight of the place is the figure of the "Black Mother of God" in the local sanctuary, which is located on a 300 m high promontory of the Monti Nebrod. Once up there, you will witness the natural spectacle of the "mare secco", a sandbank jutting into the sea. You can also enjoy a splendid view of the rocks of Tindari, the hinterland of Milazzo and as far as the Lipari Islands.

From Portorosa it is also possible to make excursions into the Sicilian interior. Messina, the third largest city in Sicily, is only an hour's drive away. The economic and cultural center on the northeastern edge of Sicily is characterized by palazzi from centuries past, the cathedral from the 12th century and a lively cultural and gastronomic life.

How to get there: Portorosa can be reached via the airports in Palermo or in Catania in the east of the island. From the airports, you must plan on a two-hour drive each way to Portorosa. Continuing by train from Catania airport is also an inexpensive alternative, but it takes more time.

Varied beaches and bays along the north coast of Sicily

The beaches and bays along the northern coast of Sicily, with their outstanding water quality and beauty, invite every water sports enthusiast and bathing holidaymaker. There are also some beautiful destinations along the northern coast.

Not far to the west is the grotto of Mongiove, a popular destination with a beautiful sandy beach. With a view of the crystal clear water, you can relax with an aperitif at the beach bar. Canoes and pedal boats can also be rented.

In Capo d'Orlando, a serene Mediterranean atmosphere awaits you against a backdrop of interesting sights, archaeological sites and fantastic cuisine.

Another place not to be missed on the north coast of Sicily is the small seaside resort of Cefalù, where those seeking relaxation in particular will find it all between the characteristic old town and white sandy beaches.

For sailors who are planning a one-week charter trip along the north coast or a two-week one with the Lipari Islands, it is worthwhile to point the bow further towards Palermo, the capital of Sicily. With Palermo a versatile city opens up to you, where you will encounter great highlights such as the Norman Palace or the Cathedral. At the foot of Monte Pellegrino, the area surrounding the city also has beautiful natural landscapes and paradise-like bays.

Experience active volcanoes in the archipelago of the Lipari Islands

The coastal town of Milazzo, east of Portorosa, is the gateway to the Lipari Islands. It is worth visiting especially for the Norman castle of Frederick the Second, around which a fortress was built. Inside you can admire the ancient cathedral of the city.

The Lipari Islands were formed 100,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions and are all part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site due to their worldwide status as living objects of research in volcanology. In addition to lunar landscapes and rugged coastlines, however, the islands are also green and inviting for hiking. There are also sandy beaches and thermal springs for bathing and relaxing around the islands. Small villages adorn most of the islands, and on Lipari and Salina you can lose yourself in the beautiful old towns.

The first of the Lipari islands, Vulcano, is also only 20 nautical miles from Portorosa, just across the bay. Furthermore, Lipari, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Filicudi and Alicudi are also included, as well as several small uninhabited islands. For a one-week charter trip, the main islands - Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Stromboli and Panarea - are particularly suitable, which can be sailed in a total of 100 nautical miles. If you want to stay longer in this area, you can still go to the two more remote islands - Filicudi and Alicudi. This tour will then take about 140 nautical miles. Within one week, therefore, several of these exciting islands can be experienced with the short distances.

The special highlight of the area is undoubtedly the still active Stromboli volcano on the island of the same name, which erupts again and again, so that you can witness the breathtaking images of this natural spectacle from the water. In normal conditions, you can even take a guided hike along the crater rim to watch the lava flows on the northern side of the slope as they flow into the sea.

On Lipari, the archaeological museum provides information about the formation of the islands and their volcanic activity. Divers can explore underwater caves on the largest of the Aeolian Islands and explore typical volcanic rock formations with a lively underwater world. In addition, the island with beautiful old town flair has, along with Salina, one of the two marinas in the territory of the Lipari Islands.

On the smallest inhabited island of Panarea you can mingle with the rich and beautiful of Italy who spend their vacations here. Accordingly, there are also possibilities for going out in the evening. On Capo Milazzese you can visit excavations of a village from the Bronze Age.

Salina is overgrown with greenery, a large part of the island is protected and invites you to go hiking. As on Lipari, there is a marina here.

Hiking is also possible on Filicuda. Divers and snorkelers can go exploring in the Blue Grotto.
