Only 12km north of Sardinia, at the southern tip of the island, lies Bonifacio with its 3000 inhabitants. The town itself resembles a fortress: it is enthroned on spectacular 60m high chalk cliffs. In addition to the Gothic church of Saint Dominique, the citadel and the numerous grottos, the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon, the staircase of the King of Aragon, is particularly breathtaking. 187 steps were carved into the stone here to create a path from the medieval upper town to the sea. Bonifacio's harbor is located in a fjord-like inlet and provides shelter in this way.
